Information Society – Music Suggestions

In the late 1980s, I bought a copy of Information Society’s album that was released at that time – which happens to be their debut album.

The band has since gone on to release several more albums, and as of this writing, their latest album was released in 2016. I haven’t as of yet listened to their newer material.

For this post, I’d like to feature the debut album I remember so well (I listened to it a lot in the late 1980s and into the 1990s).

The debut album has many good songs on it, but most Gen Xers may be most familiar with the single “What’s On Your Mind (Pure Energy),” which, as far as I’m aware, had two versions: the album version and the radio edit (link to the radio edit version on You Tube – audio only).

One or two of my other favorites from that album include “Attitude” (link to that on You Tube (audio only) – also available on this You Tube account – audio only)

Someone on You Tube uploaded the entire (vinyl version) of the debut album here.

Duran Duran – Music Suggestions (1980s – 1998)

Duran Duran – Music Suggestions (1980s – 1998)

For this post, my familiarity with Duran Duran’s music runs from the 1980s to the late 1990s album “Medazzaland, though I’m a bit fuzzy on their work after the mid or late 1980s.

(Perhaps in the future I will get around to listening to their post-1997 work and write up a part 2, if I find myself wanting to recommend their newer work or if I have the time.)

Back when I was in junior high school, Duran Duran was huge – at least among girls – though I suspect that some guys liked their music but were too embarrassed to admit it, because Duran Duran was sort of considered to be a band for girls.

When my older brother was in his 20s, he bought the Duran Duran greatest hits CD (this was before the internet, streaming, and downloading mp3s online – the Duran Duran Greatest Hits CD album art is pictured to the left…)

Anyway, I was not a Duranie per se (but I was a huge fan of their rival, Norwegian band A-Ha). I mean, I liked Duran Duran’s music just fine in the 80s, but I did not have a crush on any of the band members, as so many other girls did.

I recall, when I was in junior high, on many mornings on the school bus hearing two big Duranies get into heated arguments over which band member was cutest: one girl insisted it was John Taylor, and the other one felt quite strongly it was Simon LeBon.

Anyway, if you were a kid or a teen in the 1980s, you probably remember a lot of Duran Duran’s songs and videos from their “Rio” album (released in 1982; view Wikipedia’s page on the album), such as “Rio,” (link to that on You Tube) “Save A Prayer,” and “Hungry Like The Wolf.”

Chaka Khan – Music Suggestion

If you are Gen X, I know that I know that you remember Chaka Khan’s wonderful 1980s “I Feel For You,” (which I believe was written by Prince?).

You can – and if you are NOT Gen X, you need to – listen to “I Feel For You” here, on You Tube (audio only).

In 2018, Chaka Khan released a new album with this great new song on it, titled “Like Sugar” (link to that on You Tube, audio only). Not only is the song really good, but I really dig the video.

You can listen to this song in the embedded video below; if the song is ever removed (on the particular You Tube account), please visit You Tube’s home page and search for the band’s / singer’s name and song title to perhaps find a copy of it..

Joe Jackson – Music Suggestion

Joe Jackson –  Steppin’ Out – You Tube Link

This is one of those songs, if you’re Gen X, you probably heard on the radio in the early 1980s but have forgotten about it in the years since.

I remember wanting to look this song up on You Tube a few weeks ago but could not remember the name of the singer, or much of the song – all I could remember was the melody.

The only lyrical portion of the song I could remember at all was the song having to do with “going out at night,” (or something of that nature), and I began googling the holy hell out of any variation of any phrase having anything to do with going out to party or whatever. I eventually found the song (obviously).

Madonna – Social Media Use and Music Suggestions (part 2 – post-2000)

(The Madonna music recommendations in this post, with embedded videos, are towards the bottom, if you’d like to scroll ahead and get straight to the music.)

To be completely honest, I pretty much tuned out most of Madonna’s musical career after the late 1990s “Ray of Light” album.

I did hear the songs “Hollywood” and “American Life” (link to that on You Tube) which were on her 2003 album “American Life.” I found both songs to be lackluster, and her rapping on “American Life” was awful, and I found its rap lyrics to be dismal and ridiculous.

I didn’t pay her “Confessions on a Dance Floor” (released 2005), “Hard Candy” (2008), “MDNA” (2012),  or “Rebel Heart” (2015) albums much attention.

I did listen through all the tracks on “Rebel Heart.”

From that album, the only songs that held up, and you may like them too are the following:

“Iconic” (link to that on You Tube) and “Illumanati” (link to that on You Tube, the album version – I believe that the demo version of this song is much better).

Some felt that Madonna’s “Hung Up” (link to that song on You Tube), in which she sampled ABBA, was a pretty good song – I didn’t care for it, but it may be something readers of this blog may enjoy. Others also enjoyed “Jump” (link to that on You Tube – album version), but this is another one I felt very under-whelmed by.

Madonna – Music Suggestions (part 1 – the rare or under-played 80s songs)

Madonna – Music Suggestions (part 1 – the rare or under-played 80s songs)

If you’re Gen X, you more than likely remember songs off Madonna’s first four albums that were released for radio air play in the 1980s (which would include the self titled debut, “Madonna”; then, “Like A Virgin”; next, “True Blue”; and finally, “Like A Prayer”).

You probably remember such ’80s era Madonna songs such as

I find that some of Madonna’s songs that were not  released for radio were actually just as good, or maybe even better, than the ones that received radio air play back then.

Love And Rockets – Music Suggestion

Love and Rockets – No Big Deal –You Tube Link (audio only)

If you’re Gen X and weren’t into rock or alt bands too much back in the 1980s, you may have ignored or not even bothered with the band Love and Rockets.

Now that you’re older, I would hope that you’re more opened minded and will give this band a chance because they really do have some good songs.

You may be most familiar with their 1980s song “So Alive,” (which was on Top 40 radio back at the time) but not so much with their other songs from the same album, including “No Big Deal.”

The “No Big Deal” song, like “So Alive” was released in 1989. More information about the album this song was featured on here on Wikipedia.

Boy George and Culture Club to Release New Album in 2018

Boy George and Culture Club: The same but different

Boy George and Culture Club make long-delayed return with ‘Life’

Why it took Boy George and Culture Club 19 years to make a new album

Excerpts:

by Clark Collins
October 2018

….On Oct. 19, Boy George and Culture Club will release Life, the act’s first collection of new material in 19 years.

Why did they want to put out a new album now?

“We’ve done lots of tours over the years, and that’s always been pretty easy,” says George. “I was the one that always wanted to record a new record. I was the one that said, ‘Well, if we’re going to play live, we do need new songs.’ Without new music, you’re just doing a nostalgia thing, which has its limitations. Too much nostalgia is just boring. It was a very different process making this record, I was a lot more open to suggestions. My thing’s always been the lyrics and the melody. With the melodies, this time I let Roy and Mikey [Craig, bassist] make suggestions, and I was quite open to them — to my surprise!”

Ahead, Boy George details the new LP, name-dropping Michelle Obama, and touring with the B-52s.
