‘You’re Probably Going To Be Replaced’ Digital Music Pioneer Issues A Stark Warning For The Industry

Excerpts:

Scott Cohen is something of an enigma in the music industry. He is both an understated mensch who discreetly supports artists and music tech startups (such as a nascent Spotify) and a power player who advises industry bodies like the British Phonographic Industry.

…His pitch for what was to become The Orchard was a distribution company for the digital music age. However, most record label executives scoffed at the concept of a digital music marketplace at the time, and so the sofa-surfing Cohen bootstrapped his early days.

Leaving Neverland – the Controversial New Documentary about Singer Michael Jackson (2019)

Leaving Neverland – the Controversial New Documentary about Singer Michael Jackson (2019)

If you follow me on Twitter, you’ve no doubt seen by now the links to news stories and reviews to a new documentary about singer Michael Jackson, which alleges that Jackson molested boys.

The documentary, released in January 2019, is entitled “Leaving Neverland.” Some Michael Jackson fans are quite upset, insisting that Jackson was innocent.

I for one am agnostic on the topic.

While I do think Jackson’s frequent contact with underaged boys (he seldom hung out with girls), and that he had “sleepovers” with them, complete with alarms that would be tripped if someone tried to approach the bedroom down the hall he shared with those boys, was very strange and inappropriate, I am not sure if Jackson was performing sexual acts with any of these boys or not.

Edit: though now, as of March 2019, after having pondered more about this, having read more articles, both pro and con, and knowing what I know about how many churches cover up and deal with victims of child sex abuse; and in the course of studying  how pedophiles operate in a church context, I learned about how pedophiles groom their child targets and the adults in the children’s lives…

I therefore now lean towards thinking that unfortunately, Jackson probably was a pedophile. This does not make me happy.

I would rather Jackson be innocent, since he was a fixture of my childhood, but I have to be realistic and honest and not shy away from the truth just because the truth is uncomfortable.

I would hope that Jackson was not guilty. I have fond memories watching Jackson perform on various televised awards shows or in music videos in the early to mid 1980s.

Jackson was an electric performer, and he had what so many singers after 2000 lack: a stage presence.

If it is true that Jackson was acting inappropriately with children, that does tarnish his memory for me, the music, and it’s difficult to watch those classic videos – “Beat It,” “Billie Jean,” and “Thriller” at this point.

What follows below are links to different articles about the “Leaving Neverland” documentary, and links to Michael Jackson related sites that discuss Jackson’s alleged pedophilia.

The film could put fresh scrutiny on the King of Pop’s complicated life and artistic legacy.

…But those festival debuts have not created nearly as much of a pre-release firestorm as “Leaving Neverland,” a four-hour documentary about two men who claim they were sexually abused by the late King of Pop, Michael Jackson.

Miley Cyrus, Mark Ronson Music Suggestion for Gen X

This song – Nothing Breaks Like A Heart – was released in late 2018.

It has a strong, memorable melody, which is one thing I look for in a good pop, dance, or rock song.

Several major labels have denied song licensing rights to a forthcoming anti-abortion film, representatives for the project complained to The Hollywood Reporter. Songs denied to the movie include The Fray’s “How to Save a Life,” Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun,” and One Direction’s “Story of My Life.” Disney, Universal Music, and Sony/ATV all rejected the film’s licensing requests.

Huey Lewis and The News Prep First Album of New Songs in 18 Years (2019) – Update: New Song Released

(Post updated below October 2019)

I am hoping that the band does not attempt to emulate the current sound of rock or pop, because most of it is dreadful.

I hope that Huey Lewis and the News stick to the 1980s sound on this upcoming album.

Excerpts:

by Andy Greene, January 2019

Huey Lewis & The News have inked a deal with BMG to record their first album of original songs since 2001’s Plan B. “We’re very excited about our new album, and honestly feel that it’s among our best work – we cannot wait to get it out to fans!” Lewis said in a statement. “We’re equally excited to be with BMG, whose reputation as a ‘music-first’ label precedes them admirably.”

Three Prince albums—Musicology, 3121 and Planet Earth—are being released on vinyl for the first time.

Earlier this summer, the late icon’s estate struck a deal with Sony Music to reissue 35 albums recorded between 1978 and 2015.

The latest batch features three LPs originally released in the mid-2000s. They’ll hit the shelves on February 8th, 2019, through Sony’s Legacy Recordings.

Rap Singer Pitbull Mangles 1980s “Africa” Pop Song By Toto

Not many people seem to care for the Pitbull song “Ocean to Ocean” which contains large portions of “Africa” by Toto, as sung by someone called Rhea. The song appears on the forthcoming soundtrack for the movie “Aquaman.”

I listed to “Ocean to Ocean” myself on You Tube the other day, and to put this kindly, I do not care for the song.

A-Ha (1980s band) – Music Suggestions

A-Ha (1980s band) – Music Suggestions

A-Ha had a very creative, and one of the very first animated, music videos in the 1980s: “Take On Me.” You can watch and listen to the official video here on You Tube.

Before I ever saw photos of the band – I had no idea what they looked like – I was a huge fan; they were one of my favorite bands from the time I was about 15 to the time to age 17 (I still am fond of them to this day).

I had no idea what the band members looked like until I went to the mall and bought a .33 vinyl of their album “Hunting High and Low,” which, other than “Take On Me,” had some other catchy songs on it – and of course, their photos were on the cover, which gave me an idea of what they looked like, though I had no idea who was who on the cover.

Another really good song on that same album, that I’m afraid got overlooked, was “The Sun Always Shines on TV” (link to that on You Tube, audio only).

Johnny Lee – Music Suggestion

The song “Lookin’ For Love” was a huge, and I mean huge, country music hit back in the day (listen to the song here on You Tube, audio only).

The song was released in 1980 and was featured in the movie “Urban Cowboy.” You can read more about the song here on Wikipedia.

My mother listened to country music incessantly, at home on the stereo, and any time she drove me to piano lessons, grocery shopping, and so on, which is how I was exposed to this song and other country songs.

Even if you don’t like country music, this is one of those country songs you may like… the entire genre is not bad.

You can also listen to this song in the embedded video below; if the song is ever removed (on the particular You Tube account(s)), please visit You Tube’s home page and search for the band’s / singer’s name and song title to perhaps find copies of them:
