Leaving Neverland – the Controversial New Documentary about Singer Michael Jackson (2019)

If you follow me on Twitter, you’ve no doubt seen by now the links to news stories and reviews to a new documentary about singer Michael Jackson, which alleges that Jackson molested boys.

The documentary, released in January 2019, is entitled “Leaving Neverland.” Some Michael Jackson fans are quite upset, insisting that Jackson was innocent.

I for one am agnostic on the topic.

While I do think Jackson’s frequent contact with underaged boys (he seldom hung out with girls), and that he had “sleepovers” with them, complete with alarms that would be tripped if someone tried to approach the bedroom down the hall he shared with those boys, was very strange and inappropriate, I am not sure if Jackson was performing sexual acts with any of these boys or not.

Edit: though now, as of March 2019, after having pondered more about this, having read more articles, both pro and con, and knowing what I know about how many churches cover up and deal with victims of child sex abuse; and in the course of studying how pedophiles operate in a church context, I learned about how pedophiles groom their child targets and the adults in the children’s lives…

I therefore now lean towards thinking that unfortunately, Jackson probably was a pedophile. This does not make me happy.

I would rather Jackson be innocent, since he was a fixture of my childhood, but I have to be realistic and honest and not shy away from the truth just because the truth is uncomfortable.

I would hope that Jackson was not guilty. I have fond memories watching Jackson perform on various televised awards shows or in music videos in the early to mid 1980s.

Jackson was an electric performer, and he had what so many singers after 2000 lack: a stage presence.

If it is true that Jackson was acting inappropriately with children, that does tarnish his memory for me, the music, and it’s difficult to watch those classic videos – “Beat It,” “Billie Jean,” and “Thriller” at this point.

Miley Cyrus, Mark Ronson Music Suggestion for Gen X

This song – Nothing Breaks Like A Heart – was released in late 2018.

It has a strong, memorable melody, which is one thing I look for in a good pop, dance, or rock song.

I am hoping that the band does not attempt to emulate the current sound of rock or pop, because most of it is dreadful.

I hope that Huey Lewis and the News stick to the 1980s sound on this upcoming album.

Three Prince Albums Released On Vinyl For The First Time (2019)

The LPs, all released in the mid-2000s, will come out on Sony’s Legacy Recordings in February.

Three Prince albums—Musicology, 3121 and Planet Earth—are being released on vinyl for the first time.

Earlier this summer, the late icon’s estate struck a deal with Sony Music to reissue 35 albums recorded between 1978 and 2015.

The latest batch features three LPs originally released in the mid-2000s. They’ll hit the shelves on February 8th, 2019, through Sony’s Legacy Recordings.

3121, the first Prince album to hit the Billboard No.1 since 1989, came out in 2004, while Musicology, which includes the two Grammy Award-winning tracks “Musicology” and “Call My Name,” landed in 2006.

Axl Rose, front man for the 1980s band Guns N Roses has released a new song called “Rock the Rock” for a new Looney Tunes cartoon show.

Yes, Rose has a new solo track called “Rock The Rock,” his first new song in more than 10 years, and it debuts in the context of the Looney Tunes reboot launching this year on the streaming service Boomerang. According to YouTube, it’s from a story in which “the gang teams up to stop an asteroid from destroying the Earth.”

Rose appears alongside Bugs and other Looney Tunes characters today in an animated “Rock The Rock” music video.

A-Ha (1980s band) – Music Suggestions

A-Ha had a very creative, and one of the very first animated, music videos in the 1980s: “Take On Me.” You can watch and listen to the official video here on You Tube.

Before I ever saw photos of the band – I had no idea what they looked like – I was a huge fan; they were one of my favorite bands from the time I was about 15 to the time to age 17 (I still am fond of them to this day).

I had no idea what the band members looked like until I went to the mall and bought a .33 vinyl of their album “Hunting High and Low,” which, other than “Take On Me,” had some other catchy songs on it – and of course, their photos were on the cover, which gave me an idea of what they looked like, though I had no idea who was who on the cover.

Another really good song on that same album, that I’m afraid got overlooked, was “The Sun Always Shines on TV” (link to that on You Tube, audio only).

Melissa Manchester – Music Suggestions

Singer Melissa Manchester had a few hit songs in the early 1980s.

Manchester is probably best remembered for the song “Don’t Cry Out Loud” (link to that song on You Tube, audio only), but I remember her for the song “No One Can Love You More than Me” (link to that song on You Tube audio only), which was so good, I ran out and bought her album “Emergency” on cassette.

That song was played on the radio quite a bit on Top 40 radio stations in the early 1980s.

As it turns out, that album had another really good song on it entitled, “I Don’t Care What People Say” (link to that on You Tube).

Wang Chung – Music Suggestions

If you grew up during the 1980s, watched Mtv or listened to pop music on the radio, you probably heard Wang Chung’s “Dance Hall Days” (listen on You Tube, audio only) and “Everybody Have Fun Tonight” (listen on You Tube, audio only).

In 1997, Wang Chung released a song called “Space Junk,” (link to song on You Tube, audio only) which you may be familiar with if you watch the AMC zombie television show “The Walking Dead,” because it’s been used in scenes featuring the character Rick Grimes.

You can also listen to these songs in the embedded videos below; if the songs are ever removed (on the particular You Tube account(s)), please visit You Tube’s home page and search for the band’s / singer’s name and song title to perhaps find copies of them:

ABC (1980s band) – Music Suggestions

If you grew up during the 1980s, watched Mtv or listened to pop music on the radio, you probably heard ABC’s “Be Near Me,” (listen on You Tube, audio only) which is a very good song.

However, if you didn’t bother to purchase their album, “How To Be A … Zillionaire,” like I did (read more about that album on Wikipedia here), you’re probably unaware of some of the other very good songs from that album (because I don’t recall the band ever releasing these other songs to the radio back then).
