According to the Official Charts Company, the collection leads the midweek chart by over 4,000 combined sales, with physical formats accounting for 86% of the tally so far.

If it keeps its momentum when the weekly chart is published this Friday, it’ll mark the album’s fifth week at the summit, and its first stint at the top since the LP ruled the chart for four straight weeks in November and December 1981.

With more than six million copies sold, Queen’s Greatest Hits is the best-selling album in the history of the U.K.’s recorded music industry.

The Sudden, Lucrative Gold Rush for Old Music

Excerpts:

As the giants of classic rock contemplate retirement, music execs are dreaming up increasingly bold new ways to eke value out of their brands, images, and back catalogs

June 8, 2021

….Up till now, living, breathing classic-rock icons like the Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, and Bob Dylan haven’t had to worry much about tending to their respective flames. Touring, merch, and clever marketing of their catalogs have sustained them for well over six decades.

But the pandemic has kept them off the road for more than a year, and several of them are reaching an age where road work won’t be possible much longer. “Mick Jagger is 77,” Jampol says [Jampol has managed the estates of the Doors, Janis Joplin, Kurt Cobain, and Tupac Shakur] “At some point you’ve got to go, ‘I’m going to enjoy my grandkids.’”

It’s at that point when a band or artist, and the team around them, faces a crucial question: How can the afterlife of a career in rock maintain, or even surpass, what that act achieved in their prime?

Funny And Too-Real Tweets About Gen X by Caroline Bologna

May 18, 2021

“I’m not going to look up why ‘Gen X’ is trending I’ll just assume it’s because we died.”

There’s been much ado about the differences between Generation Y (aka millennials) and Generation Z. But considerably less attention is paid to the folks who were born before them ― the oft-forgotten Generation X.

And Gen Xers might be just fine with that. At least many of the funny ones on Twitter seem to be. We’ve rounded up 45 hilarious and relatable tweets about Gen X. Enjoy!

[Here are just a few examples from their article; I won’t be sharing them all below]

American Girl Doll Company Releases a 1980s Doll

American Girl Doll Company Releases a 1980s Doll

In some of the promotion or marketing for this doll, the American Girl Doll Company has referred to the 1980s as an “historic” time or decade – which doesn’t go over with a lot of Gen X very well.

American Girls Doll
American Girls Doll – 1980s Doll

The 1980s were not that long ago.

It’s not as though the pyramids were built during the 1980s. We did have computers, phones, movies, cars, and television sets in the ’80s.

I remember in the early 2000s, driving to my job daily, listening to the Top 40 radio station D. J. start referring to 1980s songs they played as “golden oldies.” I couldn’t believe it then. I was thinking, “Is this station serious? The ’80s were only ten years ago, not 500 years ago…”

Anyway, here are some links about the 1980s themed doll:

There’s really a 1980s American Girl doll and she’s totally rad

Excerpts:

She comes with a mini Caboodle, Lip Smackers lip gloss and Care Bears pajamas.

…American Girl announced the launch of their latest doll on the TODAY show. Courtney Moore is a video game lover who spends her time playing Pac-Man inside the arcade at her local shopping mall, looks up to the astronauts aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger and lives with her blended family.

Say Something by Kylie Minogue – Music Suggestion for Gen X

Say Something by Kylie Minogue – Music Suggestion for Gen X

If you’re Gen X (and American in particular), you may remember Kylie Minogue for her 1987 remake of a 1960s Little Eva song “The Locomotion” (personally, I prefer Little Eva’s version).

Of course, Kylie Minogue went on to release many more good songs, such as Come Into My World and Can’t Get You Out of My Head (released in 2001).

But Minogue has a new album coming out, entitled “Disco,” to be released in November 2020.

I so far have only listened to two songs off this album, “Say Something” and “Magic” (because those are the only songs to be released so far, at least as far as I am aware).

I didn’t care for “Magic” (you can listen to that on You Tube here). “Magic” is  not a bad song, but it didn’t knock me out, either.

However, I did really enjoy “Say Something” and thought other Gen Xers may like it, too.

So, if you are Gen X and still love your 1980s pop, dance and rock songs, but would occasionally like a new (good) song to work out to or listen to in the car, you may want to give this 2020 Kylie Minogue song a try:

There is also an acoustic version of Say Something by Kylie Minogue which you can check out here:

Animaniacs Cartoon Show to Be Rebooted (2020)

I used to watch Animaniacs in the 1990s, when I was a college student. I loved Pinky and the Brain – I think Pinky and the Brain were a spin off of that show?

At any rate, here are links about it:

collaborating with the studio on an untitled dance movie in which she will star and executive produce. But it refused to say if the project was tied to the 1987 hit “Dirty Dancing.”

Feltheimer said during Thursday’s call that it was indeed a “Dirty Dancing” movie.

“And to reveal one of the worst kept secrets in Hollywood, we’re pleased to confirm that Jennifer Grey will both executive produce and star in a new ‘Dirty Dancing’ movie for Lionsgate from ‘Warm Bodies’ director Jonathan Levine,” he said.

“It will be exactly the kind of romantic, nostalgic movie that the franchise’s fans have been waiting for and that have made it the biggest-selling library title in the Company’s history.”

The First Sony Walkman Was Released 40 Years Ago Today – July 1, 2019

On July 1 of 1979, Sony first began to sell the TPS-L2, first known as the Soundabout and soon rechristened the Walkman. This original Walkman wasn’t the first portable tape player, but it was the first that didn’t have a record function.

Portable cassette recorders had mostly been used by reporters; this one, with its newly designed lightweight headphones, was specifically intended for music. It changed the world.

Excerpts:

by Mat Smith, July 2019

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the first Walkman sold (the TPS-L2, naturally), Sony is showing off the history of the portable music player in central Tokyo.

It will run across the summer, through until September 1st, with writers and experts offering up interviews and talks on the iconic cassette (and CD) player series.
