Madonna – Social Media Use and Music Suggestions (part 2 – post-2000)

(The Madonna music recommendations in this post, with embedded videos, are towards the bottom, if you’d like to scroll ahead and get straight to the music.)

To be completely honest, I pretty much tuned out most of Madonna’s musical career after the late 1990s “Ray of Light” album.

I did hear the songs “Hollywood” and “American Life” (link to that on You Tube) which were on her 2003 album “American Life.” I found both songs to be lackluster, and her rapping on “American Life” was awful, and I found its rap lyrics to be dismal and ridiculous.

I didn’t pay her “Confessions on a Dance Floor” (released 2005), “Hard Candy” (2008), “MDNA” (2012),  or “Rebel Heart” (2015) albums much attention.

I did listen through all the tracks on “Rebel Heart.”

From that album, the only songs that held up, and you may like them too are the following:

“Iconic” (link to that on You Tube) and “Illumanati” (link to that on You Tube, the album version – I believe that the demo version of this song is much better).

Some felt that Madonna’s “Hung Up” (link to that song on You Tube), in which she sampled ABBA, was a pretty good song – I didn’t care for it, but it may be something readers of this blog may enjoy. Others also enjoyed “Jump” (link to that on You Tube – album version), but this is another one I felt very under-whelmed by.

Madonna – Music Suggestions (part 1 – the rare or under-played 80s songs)

If you’re Gen X, you more than likely remember songs off Madonna’s first four albums that were released for radio air play in the 1980s (which would include the self titled debut, “Madonna”; then, “Like A Virgin”; next, “True Blue”; and finally, “Like A Prayer”).

You probably remember such ’80s era Madonna songs such as

I find that some of Madonna’s songs that were not  released for radio were actually just as good, or maybe even better, than the ones that received radio air play back then.

Love And Rockets – Music Suggestion

Love and Rockets – No Big Deal –You Tube Link (audio only)

If you’re Gen X and weren’t into rock or alt bands too much back in the 1980s, you may have ignored or not even bothered with the band Love and Rockets.

Now that you’re older, I would hope that you’re more opened minded and will give this band a chance because they really do have some good songs.

You may be most familiar with their 1980s song “So Alive,” (which was on Top 40 radio back at the time) but not so much with their other songs from the same album, including “No Big Deal.”

The “No Big Deal” song, like “So Alive” was released in 1989. More information about the album this song was featured on here on Wikipedia.

Toxic Fans in the Music World: The Stans

If you’re Gen X as I am, you may remember that back in junior high and high school there were cliques, and some of them divided themselves up on the basis of what music they listened to.

Or, the cliques (which may have consisted of jocks, dweebs, surfers, or what have you) all naturally seemed to gravitate towards one type of music or another.

And sometimes, one could find a “metal head” (heavy metal fan) mocking or making fun of the kid who was into Michael Jackson, for instance.

It went from being acceptable to find Michael Jackson cool in the early or mid 1980s to being considered nerdy by other kids if you still admitted to liking him or his music by the late 1980s or so.

I remember one day, in my sophomore year of high school, before math class started, that the resident stoner metal head guy (who normally wore “Iron Maiden” band t-shirts to school) was being teased by a black guy about his metal fandom when the white metal kid shot back, “And I guess you’re a big Michael Jackson fan!” – That was considered a put-down.

By that time, MJ was out of favor with a lot of kids. If you were a MJ fan, you were supposed to keep it to yourself and not advertise it around other kids.

Anyway, that’s about as heated as things got.

But kids in the 1980s more or less politely agreed to disagree with each other over whatever singers or bands other kids enjoyed. Another kid may find your favorite singer or taste in music lame, and even tell you so, but things never got terribly heated.

Not so today.

Today, on social media, even among 20- and 30  something adults, one can find the fan groups (fandoms) of various singers going at each other’s throats.

Janet Jackson – Music Suggestions

Sure, if you’re Gen X you remember the Control album. (Read more about the Control album on Wikipedia).

You probably also remember Janet’s Rhythm Nation 1814 album. (Read more about the Rhythm Nation 1814 album on Wikipedia)

You remember Janet wearing that single key in one ear in her music videos then.

You remember “What Have You Done For Me Lately,” (Link You Tube) and “Nasty” (Link You Tube – audio only. Link You Tube – official music video).

Janet Jackson in the 1980s

You of course remember the Rhythm Nation 1814 song and video (Link You Tube). And Miss You Much (Link You Tube). Love Will Never Do Without You (Link You Tube).

You may even remember “Black Cat” (Link You Tube – audio only).

But if you’re like I am, Janet may have just dropped off your musical radar at some point in the 1990s.

So you may have missed some of her other songs post 1980s.

The other day, I went to You Tube and listened to all of Janet’s “Damito Jo” album (here). I didn’t care for most of the songs on that album – however there were one or two that I enjoyed.
